Case Study: Modernising the Entrance at Worcester College

Introduction to the Project

Worcester College required a modern, accessible, and energy-efficient entrance solution that would enhance both the flow of foot traffic and the overall visitor experience. The existing revolving door had become restrictive for patrons, difficult to navigate for those with mobility needs, and inefficient in managing thermal loss from the busy pedestrian area.

To address these issues, our team delivered a full entrance refurbishment that included:

  •  Removal of the existing revolving door
  •  Installation of a new paired manual swing door set
  •  Fitting of an automatic bi-folding door system
  •  Addition of new screen panels to create a clean, enclosed lobby

The overall objective was to create a contemporary, welcoming entrance that met the College’s high standards for accessibility, safety, and aesthetics.

Why We Used Horton Automatics Swing Door Set and Bi-Folding Door System

Horton Automatics products were selected for their proven reliability, advanced engineering, and compatibility with both heritage and modern architectural environments. Their swing door sets enhance accessibility by ensuring effortless entry for all users, including those with mobility challenges, parents with prams, and visitors carrying equipment. The automatic bi-folding door system maximises clear opening width within a limited footprint, making it ideal for the college’s constrained entrance area where space is at a premium. Designed for durability in high-traffic settings, Horton’s robust construction and long-life mechanisms provide a dependable long-term solution for Worcester College. Additionally, the minimalistic design and flexible finish options allow the systems to integrate seamlessly with the college’s architectural character while introducing a subtle contemporary touch.

Challenges

Every heritage-site installation presents its own complexities, and Worcester College was no exception. Working within the existing structural envelope required careful planning during the removal of the old revolving door to protect surrounding structures, while tight space constraints and existing framing demanded precise measurements and bespoke adaptation of the new systems. At the same time, the entrance had to remain partially operational, so work was programmed in phases to minimise disruption to students, staff, and visitors. Finally, integrating modern systems into a historic setting required balancing contemporary accessibility needs with the architectural integrity of the building, achieved through close collaboration with stakeholders and meticulous attention to visual detail.
