Case Study: Spitfire Hangar, Brabazon Reviving Heritage with Modern Automation

Introduction to the Project

Built around 1915, Hangar 16U now known as the Spitfire Hangar is one of Bristol’s most iconic heritage buildings. Originally constructed for the Royal Flying Corps, this impressive Grade II listed hangar once connected Bristol to the world and played a vital role in early aviation history.

As part of the Brabazon redevelopment, the hangar is being reborn as a local, sociable community hub. Our team was brought in to design and install an automatic entrance solution that would preserve the building’s historic charm while providing modern-day performance, energy efficiency, and accessibility.

Why We Used a Thermally Broken Paired Swing Package with Horton Swing Operators

o meet the demands of a heritage restoration combined with modern functionality, we selected the Horton Automatics 2021+ bi-parting package.

This system was the perfect choice for the Spitfire Hangar due to its:

  • Sleek and elegant design – Slim profiles complement the hangar’s classic architecture.
  • Quiet, reliable operation – Ideal for high-traffic, public environments.
  • Energy efficiency – Intelligent sensors and tight seals improve thermal performance.
  • Accessibility compliance – Fully DDA and ADA compliant for inclusive access.
  • Durability – Engineered to withstand continuous daily use with minimal maintenance.

The Horton 2021+ system offered the best balance of aesthetics, performance, and long-term reliability.

Challenges

Working on a historic building always presents unique challenges. For this project, the key considerations included:

  • Historic preservation: As a Grade II listed structure, all works had to be sympathetic to the original architecture and approved by heritage consultants.
  • Structural limitations: The existing brickwork and limited overhead space required precise engineering and installation planning.
  • Active redevelopment site: Installation took place alongside other major renovation activities, demanding close coordination with the wider construction team.

Despite these challenges, our team delivered a seamless installation that respected the site’s heritage and met modern performance standards.

Benefits of Our Product – Impact and Results

The new automatic entrance has transformed the Spitfire Hangar’s functionality and appearance.

Key results include:

  • Seamless integration with the hangar’s refurbished façade.
  • Effortless accessibility for all visitors and staff.
  • Improved energy efficiency through advanced sealing and thermal performance.
  • Enhanced aesthetics that blend heritage character with contemporary style.
  • Low maintenance and high reliability for long-term performance.

The completed system not only improves daily operations but also contributes to the hangar’s sustainability goals.
